Points to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

When you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating x-ray tech colleges near Lavaca AR. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Lavaca AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the radiology tech programs you are interested in have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Lavaca AR medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in Lavaca AR in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Lavaca AR home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Lavaca AR schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Lavaca AR area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
