Armorel AR x-ray tech school internship programThe standard prerequisite for enrolling in a radiology tech school is to have received a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to keep in mind is that radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can frequently be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in Armorel AR or their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be employed you might have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number approve other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Armorel area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options in and around Armorel AR to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Colleges

Armorel AR student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is often performed in Armorel AR hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Armorel residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online approach to education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just make certain that the online program you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

After you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of finding and evaluating x-ray tech schools near Armorel AR. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Armorel AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the xray technician schools you are assessing have relationships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Armorel AR healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in Armorel AR in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Armorel AR residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Armorel AR colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the xray tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Armorel AR area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
