X-Ray Tech Degree Options near Greenville GA

Greenville GA x-ray tech school internship programThe primary prerequisite for attending a radiology tech program is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Greenville GA or their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Georgia or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be practicing you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many offer other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Greenville area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options in and around Greenville GA to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Degrees

Greenville GA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is usually performed in Greenville GA family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Greenville residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree often discover that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently cheaper than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just make sure that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of searching for and assessing x-ray technician colleges near Greenville GA. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of radiology tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Greenville GA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the xray tech programs you are evaluating have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Greenville GA health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in Greenville GA in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Greenville GA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Greenville GA schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the xray tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Greenville GA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
