Kentland IN x-ray tech school internship programThe basic requirement for attending an x-ray tech school is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more extensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in Kentland IN or their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Indiana or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be employed you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many provide additional options for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, numerous Kentland area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options in and around Kentland IN to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Classes

Kentland IN student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in Kentland IN family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Kentland residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree often discover that the online style of learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are often less costly than conventional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online program you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

As soon as you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating x-ray tech colleges near Kentland IN. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Kentland IN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the xray technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Kentland IN healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in Kentland IN in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Indiana healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Kentland IN home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Kentland IN schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Kentland IN area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
