Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Lafayette CA or their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several approve other options for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Lafayette area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options in and around Lafayette CA to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

This is no different for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often conducted in Lafayette CA hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Lafayette home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just make certain that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

After you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and assessing x-ray tech schools near Lafayette CA. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Lafayette CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the xray technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Lafayette CA healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in Lafayette CA in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Lafayette CA residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Lafayette CA schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the xray technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the xray tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lafayette CA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Lafayette, California

Lafayette (formerly La Fayette)[8] is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. As of 2010, the city's population was 23,893. It was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero of the American Revolutionary War. Today Lafayette is known for its pastoral rolling hills, good schools, and wealthy inhabitants. In 2016, the median household income in Lafayette was over $140,000, more than twice the statewide average and about two and half times the national median.[9]

Before the colonization of the region by Spain, Lafayette and its vicinity were inhabited by the Saclan tribe of the indigenous Bay Miwok. Ohlone also populated some of the areas along Lafayette Creek.[10] The indigenous inhabitants' first contact with Europeans was in the late 18th century with the founding of Catholic missions in the region. These initial contacts developed into conflict, with years of armed struggle, including a battle on what is currently Lafayette soil in 1797 between the Saclan and the Spanish, and eventually resulting in the subjugation of the native population.

Most of what is currently Lafayette was given as a Mexican land grant, Rancho Acalanes to Candelario Valencia in 1834. The name Acalanes seems to have come from the name of a native village in the area, Ahala-n.[11]
