Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate also. Something to consider is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Lowell AR or their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Arkansas or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many approve additional options for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Lowell area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options in and around Lowell AR to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Programs

Lowell AR student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in Lowell AR hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Lowell residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online programs are generally less expensive than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just make sure that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

After you have decided on the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of finding and evaluating x-ray tech schools near Lowell AR. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of xray tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Lowell AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the radiology tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Lowell AR health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in Lowell AR in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Lowell AR home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Lowell AR colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the xray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the xray tech  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lowell AR area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
