Port Richey FL x-ray tech school internship programThe standard requirement for enrolling in an x-ray tech college is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable as well. Something to bear in mind is that radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Port Richey FL or their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Florida or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number approve additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Port Richey area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options in and around Port Richey FL to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Classes

Port Richey FL student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often conducted in Port Richey FL family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Port Richey home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of learning is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online programs are frequently cheaper than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just be sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

When you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and assessing x-ray tech schools near Port Richey FL. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Port Richey FL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the radiology tech programs you are reviewing have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Port Richey FL health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in Port Richey FL in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Port Richey FL home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Port Richey FL colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Port Richey FL area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
