An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to consider is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be satisfied by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in Walden CO or their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Colorado or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number accept other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Walden area employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options in and around Walden CO to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Colleges

Walden CO student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a significant amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually conducted in Walden CO family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Walden home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are frequently cheaper than traditional options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just confirm that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Schools

Once you have selected the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of locating and assessing x-ray tech schools near Walden CO. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Walden CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the xray tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Walden CO health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in Walden CO in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Walden CO home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Walden CO colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the xray technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the xray tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Walden CO area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
