After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Alaska or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number approve other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, many Bethel area employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options in and around Bethel AK to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Programs

Bethel AK student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is typically carried out in Bethel AK hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Bethel residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are generally less costly than traditional options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just confirm that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

After you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating x-ray technician colleges near Bethel AK. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material factor also. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? Most radiology technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Bethel AK employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the xray tech programs you are assessing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Bethel AK medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in Bethel AK in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Bethel AK home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Bethel AK colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the xray tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bethel AK area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Bethel, Alaska

Bethel (Mamterilleq in Central Alaskan Yup'ik; Russian: Бетел) is the largest community on the Kuskokwim River, located approximately 50 mi (80 km) upriver from where the river flows into Kuskokwim Bay. Bethel is the largest community in western Alaska and in the Unorganized Borough, as well as the ninth largest in the state, with a population of 6,080 as of the 2010 Census.[8]

Southwestern Alaska has been the homelands of Yup'ik peoples and their ancestors for thousands of years. The residents of what became Bethel were called the Mamterillermiut, meaning "Smokehouse People", after their nearby fish smokehouse.[10] In the late 19th century, the Alaska Commercial Company established a trading post in the town, called Mumtrekhlogamute, which had a population of 41 people by the 1880 US Census.[10]

In 1885, the Moravian Church established a mission in the area under the leadership of Rev. William Weinland and Caroline (born Yost) [11] and John Henry Kilbuck, Jr., a Lenape, and his wife Edith, a daughter and granddaughter of Moravian missionaries in Kansas.[citation needed] They both learned Yup'ik, which greatly enhanced their effectiveness as missionaries.[citation needed] He made Yup'ik the language of the Moravian Church in the community and region, and helped translate scripture into the people's language.[citation needed] The missionaries moved Bethel from Mamterillermiut to its present location on the west side of the Kuskokwim River. A United States post office was opened in 1905.[citation needed]
