Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to keep in mind is that radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Friant CA or their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an Radiologist college, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number accept additional options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Friant area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options in and around Friant CA to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Degrees

Friant CA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically carried out in Friant CA family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Friant residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually discover that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than conventional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just be sure that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating x-ray tech colleges near Friant CA. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Friant CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the radiology technician colleges you are interested in have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Friant CA health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in Friant CA in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Friant CA residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Friant CA schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Friant CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
