Guion AR x-ray tech school internship programThe primary prerequisite for attending an x-ray tech program is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally takes 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate also. One thing to consider is that radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in Guion AR or their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Arkansas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number approve other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, many Guion area employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options in and around Guion AR to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Programs

Guion AR student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a large portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is often performed in Guion AR family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Guion home. Students who keep working while earning their degree often discover that the online style of education is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Colleges

Once you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and evaluating x-ray technician schools near Guion AR. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining variable also. But along with location and cost, what else should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Guion AR health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the radiology tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Guion AR health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in Guion AR in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Guion AR residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Guion AR colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Guion AR area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
