Radiology Tech Degree Options near Lake Mary FL

Lake Mary FL x-ray tech school internship programThe primary prerequisite for attending an x-ray tech program is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable as well. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can typically be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in Lake Mary FL or their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Florida or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be employed you might have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many accept additional options for testing also. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Lake Mary area employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options in and around Lake Mary FL to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Classes

Lake Mary FL student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is typically carried out in Lake Mary FL hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Lake Mary residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree often discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are often less costly than conventional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just confirm that the online program you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiographer Programs

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating x-ray technician schools near Lake Mary FL. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Lake Mary FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the radiology tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Lake Mary FL medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in Lake Mary FL in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Lake Mary FL home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Lake Mary FL schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lake Mary FL area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
