Oakman AL x-ray tech school internship programThe standard prerequisite for enrolling in a radiology tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in Oakman AL or their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Alabama or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several approve additional options for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Oakman area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options in and around Oakman AL to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Degrees

Oakman AL student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in Oakman AL hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Oakman residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online style of education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

When you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and evaluating x-ray technician colleges near Oakman AL. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Oakman AL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the radiology tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Oakman AL health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in Oakman AL in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Alabama healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Oakman AL home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Oakman AL schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the xray tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Oakman AL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
