Tahoe City CA radiologic technologist examining x-rayThere are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, each has the same primary job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may practice in Tahoe City CA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and frequently assess its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degrees Available near Tahoe City CA

Tahoe City CA x-ray tech school internship programThe basic requirement for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable as well. Something to consider is that radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can typically be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in Tahoe City CA or their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several offer additional alternatives for testing also. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Tahoe City area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options in and around Tahoe City CA to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Degrees

Tahoe City CA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually carried out in Tahoe City CA family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Tahoe City home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are generally less expensive than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

After you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of searching for and assessing x-ray tech colleges near Tahoe City CA. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material factor also. But along with cost and location, what more should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Tahoe City CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the xray technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Tahoe City CA medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in Tahoe City CA in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Tahoe City CA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Tahoe City CA schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Tahoe City CA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
