But now that you have made a decision to go into the rewarding field of healthcare, just how do you tackle selecting the right college and program to ensure that you will obtain the proper training to become a skilled practitioner? And because most states do require that x-ray techs become licensed, depending on where you ultimately work you may require preparation to pass a licensing exam. So it’s important that you assess each of the X-ray technician schools you are looking at in order to evaluate each program. Many prospective students start by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and usually settle on the lowest cost. But while expense and location need to be considered, there are additional critical qualifiers also. For instance, you need to ask if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the X-ray Tech schools you are reviewing are presented later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a radiologic technician does and the degrees and education choices that are available.

X-Ray Technician Degree Options near Vienna NJ

Vienna NJ x-ray tech school internship programThe standard requirement for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have received a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate as well. Something to consider is that radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can frequently be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in Vienna NJ or their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several offer additional options for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Vienna area employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options in and around Vienna NJ to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Degrees

Vienna NJ student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically carried out in Vienna NJ family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Vienna home. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just make certain that the online program you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

When you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and assessing x-ray tech colleges near Vienna NJ. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Vienna NJ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the xray tech schools you are assessing have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Vienna NJ healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in Vienna NJ in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Vienna NJ home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Vienna NJ colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the xray tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Vienna NJ area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
