An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Barnesville GA or their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Georgia or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number provide other options for testing also. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, many Barnesville area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options in and around Barnesville GA to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Degrees

Barnesville GA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a significant amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in Barnesville GA family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Barnesville home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are generally less expensive than on-campus options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online college you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

When you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating x-ray technician colleges near Barnesville GA. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of xray tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Barnesville GA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the xray technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Barnesville GA health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in Barnesville GA in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Barnesville GA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Barnesville GA schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the xray technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Barnesville GA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
