X-Ray Technician Degrees near Clive IA

Clive IA x-ray tech school internship programThe primary prerequisite for attending an x-ray tech school is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more extensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. One thing to keep in mind is that radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in Clive IA or their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Iowa or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept other options for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Clive area employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could increase your career options in and around Clive IA to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Degrees

Clive IA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is usually provided in Clive IA hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Clive residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less costly than conventional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just confirm that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Colleges

When you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating x-ray technician schools near Clive IA. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Clive IA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the xray tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Clive IA health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in Clive IA in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Iowa healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Clive IA residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Clive IA colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the xray technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Clive IA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Clive, Iowa

Clive is a city in Dallas and Polk counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2010 Census the population is at 15,447. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clive is known for its Greenbelt Park and trail system running through the community. Clive serves as the axis of the western Des Moines suburbs, being between Urbandale, Waukee and West Des Moines along the major transportation corridors of I-35, I-80 and I-235. The City of Urbandale is to the north to northwest, the City of West Des Moines is to the southeast to southwest, the City of Waukee in Dallas County is to the west.

In its early days, Clive was a coal mining town and a railroad shipping point along the St. Louis – Des Moines Northern Railway. The railroad depot, which dates back from 1882, has been restored while the neighboring Swanson House, dating back from 1911, serves as the headquarters for the Clive Historical Society.[8]

After incorporation in 1956, Clive has served as a mostly residential suburb of Des Moines, and the city has grown in both land area and population since that time. Most of Clive's businesses are along 86th Street, Hickman Road (which forms most of the boundary with Urbandale), and University Avenue (which forms the boundary with West Des Moines). Clive has been part of the West Des Moines School District since 1962;[6] the portion of Clive that is in Dallas County is part of the Waukee School District.
