X-Ray Technician Degrees Offered near Poplarville MS

Poplarville MS x-ray tech school internship programThe basic requirement for enrolling in a radiology tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable also. One thing to keep in mind is that radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in Poplarville MS or their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Mississippi or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number provide additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Poplarville area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options in and around Poplarville MS to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Schools

Poplarville MS student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree programs. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically performed in Poplarville MS hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Poplarville residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are often cheaper than conventional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just be sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Colleges

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing x-ray tech colleges near Poplarville MS. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Poplarville MS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the xray tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Poplarville MS healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in Poplarville MS in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Mississippi healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Poplarville MS residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Poplarville MS schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the xray tech  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Poplarville MS area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
