An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more expansive in nature. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be satisfied by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in El Cerrito CA or their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many offer other options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, many El Cerrito area employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options in and around El Cerrito CA to earn certification. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

El Cerrito CA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is typically conducted in El Cerrito CA hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your El Cerrito home. Students who keep working while earning their degree often discover that the online approach to education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are generally less expensive than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Colleges

As soon as you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and assessing x-ray tech schools near El Cerrito CA. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of El Cerrito CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the radiology technician schools you are interested in have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the El Cerrito CA health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in El Cerrito CA in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their El Cerrito CA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the El Cerrito CA colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the xray tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the xray tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the El Cerrito CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

    El Cerrito, California

El Cerrito is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States, and forms part of the San Francisco Bay Area. It has a population of 23,549 according to the 2010 census. El Cerrito was founded by refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It was incorporated in 1917 as a village with 1,500 residents. As of the census in 2000, there were 23,171 people, 10,208 households and 5,971 families in the city. The top 20 employers in the city, according to the 2013 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, include such entities as the West Contra Costa Unified School District, the City of El Cerrito, Lucky Stores, Pastime ACE Hardware, and Honda of El Cerrito.

El Cerrito was founded by refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. They settled in what was then Don Víctor Castro's Rancho San Pablo, and adjacent to the ranch owned by the family of Luís María Peralta, the Rancho San Antonio.[8] A post office opened at the settlement in 1909 and the refugee camp became known as Rust, after Wilhelm F. Rust, its first postmaster.[9][10] The village's residents did not care for the name and changed it to El Cerrito (meaning "little hills" or "knoll") in 1916, in reference to the many individual hills in the village.[9] A year later, El Cerrito was incorporated as a village with 1,500 residents.[8]

El Cerrito is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The hilly areas of El Cerrito provide views of its neighboring city, and of the Golden Gate Bridge. El Cerrito is located along Interstate 80, and nearby Interstate 580. The city is less than 30 miles from two major airports. El Cerrito is bordered by Albany and Kensington to the south, the Richmond annex to the west, East Richmond Heights to the north, and Wildcat Canyon Regional Park to the east. Local landmark Albany Hill is in Albany, just across the border with El Cerrito. (El Cerrito—Spanish, "the little hill"—takes its name from Albany Hill.)[citation needed] The Hayward Fault runs through El Cerrito. In addition, El Cerrito is within 150 meters (490 feet) of Berkeley to the southeast.
