Radiology Tech Degree Options near Larkspur CA

Larkspur CA x-ray tech school internship programThe primary prerequisite for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable as well. Something to consider is that radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can typically be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in Larkspur CA or their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be employed you might have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several offer other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, many Larkspur area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options in and around Larkspur CA to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Programs

Larkspur CA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often carried out in Larkspur CA family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Larkspur residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just confirm that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

When you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing x-ray technician schools near Larkspur CA. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining factor also. But along with cost and location, what else should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Larkspur CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the radiology tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Larkspur CA health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in Larkspur CA in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the radiographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Larkspur CA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Larkspur CA schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the xray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Larkspur CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
