And since the majority of states do require that x-ray techs become licensed, depending on where you ultimately work you may need training to pass a licensing test. So it’s important that you assess each of the X-ray technician schools you are considering in order to compare each program. Many potential students start by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and often settle on the lowest cost. But while expense and location need to be taken into consideration, there are additional important qualifications as well. For instance, you need to ask if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These questions and others you must ask the X-ray Tech schools you are considering are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic technician does and the degrees and education options that are available.

Thornton CA radiologic technologist examining x-rayThere are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same fundamental job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They may work in Thornton CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and frequently assess its performance and safety. They are also expected to retain detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degree Options near Thornton CA

Thornton CA x-ray tech school internship programThe primary requirement for attending an x-ray tech college is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to bear in mind is that radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in Thornton CA or their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept other options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Thornton area employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options in and around Thornton CA to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Classes

Thornton CA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually provided in Thornton CA family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Thornton home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are generally cheaper than conventional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of locating and evaluating x-ray technician schools near Thornton CA. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining factor also. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most xray tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Thornton CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the radiology tech schools you are evaluating have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Thornton CA medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in Thornton CA in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Thornton CA home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Thornton CA colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Thornton CA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Joe Thornton

Joseph Eric Thornton (born July 2, 1979) is a Canadian-American professional ice hockey centre and an alternate captain for the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected first overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and went on to play seven seasons with the club, three as its captain. During the 2005–06 season, he was traded to the Sharks. Splitting the campaign between the two teams, he received the Art Ross and Hart Memorial Trophies as the league's leading point-scorer and most valuable player, respectively.[1]

Thornton's on-ice vision, strength on the puck, deft passing ability and power forward style of play have led to him becoming one of the league's premier top line centres.[2] Listed at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, he has received the nickname Jumbo Joe. His nickname also comes from Jumbo the elephant who was killed in 1885 in St. Thomas, Ontario, where Thornton was born.[3][4]

Thornton grew up playing minor hockey in his hometown of St. Thomas, Ontario, for the St. Thomas Travelers. He played "AA" hockey for the Travelers and in peewee won an Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) championship in 1992–93.[5][6] His Bantam year was the first for the newly created "AAA" Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs organization, and Thornton joined the "AAA" Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs of the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario for the 1993–94 season. The creation of this organization led to the St. Thomas Minor Hockey Association to compete at the "A" level. During his bantam year, he appeared in six games for the Junior B St. Thomas Stars of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA), scoring eight points in six games as a 14-year-old. The following season, Thornton joined the Stars full-time and reeled off 104 points over 50 games as a 15-year-old,[7] and was subsequently drafted second overall in the 1995 OHL Draft to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds behind Daniel Tkaczuk, who was selected by the Barrie Colts.
