Radiology Technician Degrees near East Hartland CT

East Hartland CT x-ray tech school internship programThe basic prerequisite for attending a radiology tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in East Hartland CT or their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Connecticut or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be employed you might need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many offer other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many East Hartland area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options in and around East Hartland CT to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Degrees

East Hartland CT student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is often provided in East Hartland CT hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the privacy of your East Hartland residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Colleges

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating x-ray tech schools near East Hartland CT. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous East Hartland CT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the xray tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the East Hartland CT healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in East Hartland CT in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their East Hartland CT home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the East Hartland CT schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the East Hartland CT area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
