Eastford CT x-ray tech school internship programThe standard requirement for enrolling in a radiology tech program is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Eastford CT or their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Connecticut or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many accept additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Eastford area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options in and around Eastford CT to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Schools

Eastford CT student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in Eastford CT family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Eastford residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually discover that the online style of education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

When you have selected the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and assessing x-ray technician colleges near Eastford CT. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a material factor as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Eastford CT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the xray tech schools you are interested in have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Eastford CT health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in Eastford CT in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Eastford CT residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Eastford CT colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the xray technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the xray tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Eastford CT area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
