Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. Something to bear in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in Hamden CT or their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Connecticut or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist school, based on the state where you will be practicing you might have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several approve other alternatives for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Hamden area employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options in and around Hamden CT to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Degrees

Hamden CT student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in Hamden CT hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Hamden home. Students who continue working while earning their degree often discover that the online style of education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

When you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating x-ray technician schools near Hamden CT. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material variable as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Hamden CT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the xray technician programs you are interested in have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Hamden CT healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in Hamden CT in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Hamden CT home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Hamden CT colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the xray tech  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hamden CT area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
