Lake City FL x-ray tech school internship programThe basic requirement for enrolling in a radiology tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally takes 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can frequently be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in Lake City FL or their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Florida or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be employed you might have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, many Lake City area employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options in and around Lake City FL to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Colleges

Lake City FL student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in Lake City FL family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Lake City home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are often less costly than conventional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just confirm that the online college you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

After you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing x-ray technician colleges near Lake City FL. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a material factor also. But along with cost and location, what more should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Lake City FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the xray technician programs you are interested in have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Lake City FL medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in Lake City FL in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Lake City FL home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Lake City FL colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the xray tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Lake City FL area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
