Donovan IL x-ray tech school internship programThe primary prerequisite for attending a radiology tech college is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to bear in mind is that radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Donovan IL or their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Illinois or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Donovan area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options in and around Donovan IL to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Classes

Donovan IL student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is usually carried out in Donovan IL hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Donovan residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than traditional options. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just make certain that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing x-ray technician schools near Donovan IL. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining factor also. But along with location and cost, what else should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Donovan IL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the xray technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Donovan IL medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in Donovan IL in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Donovan IL residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Donovan IL schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the xray tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Donovan IL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
