X-Ray Tech Degrees Offered near Otterbein IN

Otterbein IN x-ray tech school internship programThe basic prerequisite for attending an x-ray tech school is to have received a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate also. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in Otterbein IN or their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Indiana or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many approve other options for testing also. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Otterbein area employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options in and around Otterbein IN to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Programs

Otterbein IN student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your degree online, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is typically performed in Otterbein IN hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Otterbein home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

As soon as you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating x-ray tech schools near Otterbein IN. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining variable also. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Otterbein IN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the radiology technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Otterbein IN healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in Otterbein IN in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Indiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Otterbein IN residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Otterbein IN colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Otterbein IN area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
