Radiology Tech Degree Options near Ottumwa IA

Ottumwa IA x-ray tech school internship programThe primary prerequisite for attending a radiology tech program is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Ottumwa IA or their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Iowa or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional options for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Ottumwa area employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options in and around Ottumwa IA to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Degrees

Ottumwa IA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a substantial portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is often carried out in Ottumwa IA family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Ottumwa residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just make certain that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

Questions to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

After you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating x-ray tech schools near Ottumwa IA. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? Most xray tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ottumwa IA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the radiology technician schools you are interested in have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Ottumwa IA medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in Ottumwa IA in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Iowa healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Ottumwa IA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Ottumwa IA colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Ottumwa IA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
