X-Ray Tech Degrees near Manhattan KS

Manhattan KS x-ray tech school internship programThe primary requirement for enrolling in a radiology tech college is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in Manhattan KS or their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number approve additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Manhattan area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options in and around Manhattan KS to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Degrees

Manhattan KS student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is typically conducted in Manhattan KS family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Manhattan home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online approach to learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just make sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating x-ray technician schools near Manhattan KS. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important variable also. But along with location and cost, what else should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Manhattan KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the radiology technician programs you are assessing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Manhattan KS medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in Manhattan KS in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Manhattan KS residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Manhattan KS schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the xray tech  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Manhattan KS area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Manhattan, Kansas

Manhattan is a city in northeastern Kansas in the United States at the junction of the Kansas River and Big Blue River. It is the county seat[7] of Riley County, although it extends into Pottawatomie County. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 52,281.[8]

The city was founded by settlers from the New England Emigrant Aid Company as a Free-State town in the 1850s, during the Bleeding Kansas era. Nicknamed "The Little Apple" as a play on New York City's "Big Apple", Manhattan is best known as the home of Kansas State University and has a distinct college town atmosphere.

Before settlement by European-Americans in the 1850s, the land where Manhattan sits was home to Native American tribes.[9] Most recently, from 1780 to 1830 it was home to the Kaw people (also known as the Kansa).[9] The Kaw settlement was called Blue Earth Village (Manyinkatuhuudje).[9] It was named after the river the tribe called the Great Blue Earth River – today known as the Big Blue River – which intersected with the Kansas River by their village.[9] Blue Earth Village was the site of a large battle between the Kaw and the Pawnee in 1812.[9]
