You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Cynthiana KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the xray technician colleges you are assessing have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Cynthiana KY healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Cynthiana KY residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Cynthiana KY colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the xray tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cynthiana KY area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
