Rose City MI x-ray tech school internship programThe basic requirement for enrolling in a radiology tech program is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Rose City MI or their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several offer other options for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Rose City area employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options in and around Rose City MI to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Schools

Rose City MI student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a large amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often provided in Rose City MI hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Rose City home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online style of education is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online schools are generally less expensive than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

After you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of locating and evaluating x-ray technician schools near Rose City MI. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of radiology tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Rose City MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the xray technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Rose City MI healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in Rose City MI in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Rose City MI home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Rose City MI schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Rose City MI area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
