    Malta Bend was platted in 1867.[6] The community was named after a nearby meander on the Missouri River where steamer Malta sank.[7] A post office called Malta Bend has been in operation since 1860.[8]

The racial makeup of the city was 96.4% White, 1.2% African American, 1.6% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races.
