Harrison NY x-ray tech school internship programThe primary requirement for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have received a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate also. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in Harrison NY or their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many offer other alternatives for testing also. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Harrison area employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options in and around Harrison NY to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Classes

Harrison NY student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually performed in Harrison NY family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Harrison home. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online style of education is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

When you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing x-ray tech colleges near Harrison NY. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a material factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Harrison NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the radiology tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Harrison NY healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in Harrison NY in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Harrison NY residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Harrison NY colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the xray tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Harrison NY area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Harrison, New York

Harrison is a coterminous town-village located in Westchester County, New York, approximately 22 miles (35 km) northeast of Manhattan. The population was 27,472 at the 2010 census.[4] Harrison was ranked sixth in the list of the top 10 places to live in New York State for 2014 according to the national online real estate brokerage Movoto.[5]

Harrison was established in 1696 by a patent granted by the British government to John Harrison and three others, who had a year earlier bargained with local Native Americans to purchase an area of land above Westchester Path (an old trail that led from Manhattan to Port Chester) and below Rye Lake.[7] Local custom holds that Harrison was given 24 hours to ride his horse around the area he could claim, and the horse couldn't swim or didn't want to get its feet wet, but this is folklore.[8] In fact, the land below Westchester Path and along Long Island Sound had already been purchased and partly developed by the settlers of Rye, NY.

The area that became Harrison had also been sold in 1661 or 1662, and again in 1666, to Peter Disbrow, John Budd, and other investors or early residents of Rye.[9] Disbrow and Budd evidently lost their paperwork and the land was ultimately granted to Harrison and his co-investors in 1696. So upset were the people of Rye that they seceded to the Colony of Connecticut until 1700, when the King of England ordered Rye to rejoin the Colony of New York.[10]
