X-Ray Tech Degrees Offered near Montgomery NY

Montgomery NY x-ray tech school internship programThe basic requirement for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to keep in mind is that radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can typically be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Montgomery NY or their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several offer other options for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, many Montgomery area employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options in and around Montgomery NY to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Degrees

Montgomery NY student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still obtain your online degree, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is typically carried out in Montgomery NY hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Montgomery residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually discover that the online style of education is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just make sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

As soon as you have selected the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating x-ray tech schools near Montgomery NY. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Montgomery NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the xray tech schools you are assessing have relationships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Montgomery NY healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in Montgomery NY in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Montgomery NY home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Montgomery NY schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the xray tech  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Montgomery NY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
