X-Ray Tech Degrees near Emmaus PA

Emmaus PA x-ray tech school internship programThe primary requirement for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Emmaus PA or their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Emmaus area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options in and around Emmaus PA to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Degrees

Emmaus PA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is usually carried out in Emmaus PA family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Emmaus home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are often less expensive than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just be sure that the online college you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Programs

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of locating and evaluating x-ray technician colleges near Emmaus PA. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating colleges? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Emmaus PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the xray technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Emmaus PA healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in Emmaus PA in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Emmaus PA home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Emmaus PA schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the xray tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Emmaus PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
