Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable also. One thing to consider is that radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Westminster SC or their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in South Carolina or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many provide other options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Westminster area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might improve your career options in and around Westminster SC to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Programs

Westminster SC student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a large amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically performed in Westminster SC hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Westminster residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online style of learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online program you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating x-ray tech colleges near Westminster SC. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining factor also. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Westminster SC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the radiology tech colleges you are interested in have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Westminster SC health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in Westminster SC in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Westminster SC residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Westminster SC schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Westminster SC area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
