Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally takes 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to keep in mind is that radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in Pierre SD or their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in South Dakota or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several provide other options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Pierre area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options in and around Pierre SD to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Colleges

Pierre SD student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often conducted in Pierre SD family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Pierre residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

Once you have selected the type of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing x-ray technician schools near Pierre SD. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important variable also. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Pierre SD employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the radiology tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Pierre SD healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in Pierre SD in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with South Dakota healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Pierre SD home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Pierre SD schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the xray technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pierre SD area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Pierre, South Dakota

The population was 13,646 at the 2010 census, making it the second-least populous state capital in the United States, following Montpelier, Vermont. It is the eighth-most populous city in South Dakota. Founded in 1880, it was selected as the state capital when the territory was admitted as a state. Pierre is the principal city of the Pierre Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Hughes and Stanley counties.

The city was founded in 1880 on the east bank of the Missouri River opposite Fort Pierre, a former trading post that developed as a community. Pierre was designated as the state capital when South Dakota gained statehood on November 2, 1889.

Huron challenged the city to be selected as the capital, but Pierre was selected because of its location in the geographic center of the state. Fort Pierre had developed earlier, with a permanent settlement since about 1817 around a fur trading post. Fort Pierre Chouteau, preceding the city, was named after Pierre Chouteau, Jr., a major American fur trader from St. Louis, Missouri, who was of colonial French origin.
