Salem SD x-ray tech school internship programThe standard prerequisite for attending a radiology tech program is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to consider is that radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in Salem SD or their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in South Dakota or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many accept additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, many Salem area employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options in and around Salem SD to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Colleges

Salem SD student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your online degree, a substantial portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is usually performed in Salem SD family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Salem home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are generally less expensive than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just be sure that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Programs

As soon as you have selected the type of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of looking for and assessing x-ray technician colleges near Salem SD. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material factor as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Salem SD health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the radiology technician schools you are evaluating have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Salem SD health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in Salem SD in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with South Dakota healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Salem SD home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Salem SD colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the xray tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Salem SD area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
