The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many approve additional options for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Athens area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could increase your career options in and around Athens TX to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Classes

Athens TX student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is typically provided in Athens TX hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Athens residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just be sure that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

Once you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of locating and evaluating x-ray technician schools near Athens TX. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Athens TX employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the radiology tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Athens TX medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in Athens TX in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Athens TX home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Athens TX schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the xray tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the xray tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Athens TX area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
