Greenwood LA x-ray tech school internship programThe standard requirement for attending an x-ray tech program is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can typically be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Greenwood LA or their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Louisiana or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many offer additional options for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, numerous Greenwood area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options in and around Greenwood LA to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Programs

Greenwood LA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically provided in Greenwood LA hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Greenwood residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online approach to education is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than on-campus options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just make sure that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

When you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing x-ray tech colleges near Greenwood LA. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important variable also. But along with cost and location, what more should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Greenwood LA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the radiology technician programs you are evaluating have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Greenwood LA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in Greenwood LA in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Greenwood LA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Greenwood LA colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the xray technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Greenwood LA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
