Mandeville LA x-ray tech school internship programThe primary prerequisite for enrolling in an x-ray tech college is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to keep in mind is that radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in Mandeville LA or their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Louisiana or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several provide other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Mandeville area employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options in and around Mandeville LA to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Colleges

Mandeville LA student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in Mandeville LA hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Mandeville home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

As soon as you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and assessing x-ray technician colleges near Mandeville LA. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Mandeville LA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the radiology technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Mandeville LA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in Mandeville LA in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Mandeville LA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Mandeville LA colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Mandeville LA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Mandeville, Louisiana

Mandeville is a small city in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 11,560 at the 2010 census.[3] Mandeville is located on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain, south of Interstate 12. It is across the lake from the city of New Orleans and its southshore suburbs. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner metropolitan area.

The area had long been agricultural land when the town of Mandeville was laid out in 1834 by developer Bernard Xavier de Marigny de Mandeville, more often known as Bernard de Marigny. In 1840 Mandeville was incorporated as a town. It became a popular summer destination for well-to-do New Orleanians wishing to escape the city's heat.

In the mid-19th century, regular daily steamboat traffic between New Orleans and Mandeville began, and by the end of the Victorian era, it had become a popular weekend destination of the New Orleans middle class as well. Bands would play music on the ships going across the lake and at pavilions and dance halls in Mandeville, and the town became one of the first places where the new "jazz" music was heard outside of New Orleans. Bunk Johnson, Buddy Petit, Papa Celestin, George Lewis, Kid Ory, Edmond Hall, Chester Zardis, and many other early jazz artists regularly played in Mandeville.
