Mattawan MI x-ray tech school internship programThe basic requirement for attending an x-ray tech college is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Mattawan MI or their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Michigan or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many provide other options for testing also. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Mattawan area employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options in and around Mattawan MI to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Schools

Mattawan MI student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is often conducted in Mattawan MI family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Mattawan home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are generally less expensive than conventional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just confirm that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Schools

When you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of finding and assessing x-ray tech colleges near Mattawan MI. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of xray tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Mattawan MI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the xray tech programs you are assessing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Mattawan MI medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in Mattawan MI in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Mattawan MI home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Mattawan MI schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the xray tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the xray tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Mattawan MI area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
