Dover NJ doctor examining x-raySo you have made the decision to enroll in an X-ray tech school near Dover NJ so you can learn to be a radiologic technologist. And now that you have chosen to go into the rewarding field of healthcare, how do you tackle selecting the ideal college and program so that you will obtain the proper training to become a skilled professional? And because the majority of states do mandate that x-ray technicians become licensed, depending on where you ultimately work you might need preparation to pass a licensing test. So it’s imperative that you assess each of the X-ray technician schools you are considering so that you can compare each program. Most students begin by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and typically gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while expense and location must be taken into account, there are other critical qualifications also. For example, you need to ask whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the X-ray Tech schools you are evaluating are provided later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and training options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Work Description in Dover NJ

Dover NJ radiologic technologist examining x-rayThere are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the identical principal job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They may practice in Dover NJ hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also routinely analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degree Options near Dover NJ

Dover NJ x-ray tech school internship programThe primary requirement for attending an x-ray tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate also. One thing to consider is that radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can typically be satisfied by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Dover NJ or their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in New Jersey or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many approve other options for testing also. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Dover area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options in and around Dover NJ to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Colleges

Dover NJ student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually carried out in Dover NJ family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Dover home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of learning is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are often cheaper than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just make sure that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

Once you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating x-ray technician colleges near Dover NJ. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material variable also. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? Most xray tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Dover NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the radiology technician programs you are interested in have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Dover NJ healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in Dover NJ in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Dover NJ residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Dover NJ schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the xray technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the xray tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dover NJ area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Dover, New Jersey

Dover is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. Located on the Rockaway River, Dover is about 31 miles (50 km) west of New York City and about 23 miles (37 km) west of Newark, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the town's population was 18,157,[9][10][11] reflecting a decline of 31 (-0.2%) from the 18,188 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 3,073 (+20.3%) from the 15,115 counted in the 1990 Census.[20] Dover has become a majority minority community, with nearly 70% of the population as of the 2010 Census identifying themselves as Hispanic, up from 25% in 1980.[21]

Joseph Latham was deeded the land that includes present-day Dover in 1713, from portions of land that had been purchased from Native Americans by the Proprietors of West Jersey. On May 31, 1722, Latham and his wife Jane deeded 527 acres (2.13 km2) over to John Jackson of Flushing, New York. Jackson settled on the eastern portion of his land along Granny's Brook at the site of what would later become the Ross Ribbon Factory on Park Heights Avenue.[22]

Iron ore at the time was so plentiful that it could be collected off the ground at the nearby Dickerson Mine in Mine Hill. At Jackson's Forge, ore would be processed into bars that would then be transported to Paterson and other industrial areas towards the east. The passage of the Iron Act by the British Parliament led to financial difficulties, leading Jackson into bankruptcy in 1753, with all of his property and belongings sold off at a Sheriff's sale. Quaker Hartshorne Fitz Randolph purchased Jackson's property and annexed to his own existing property, which would later become part of Randolph Township.[23]
