X-Ray Technician Degrees Offered near Woodbury NJ

Woodbury NJ x-ray tech school internship programThe primary requirement for attending a radiology tech program is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable also. Something to consider is that radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in Woodbury NJ or their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in New Jersey or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional alternatives for testing also. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Woodbury area employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options in and around Woodbury NJ to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Degrees

Woodbury NJ student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually conducted in Woodbury NJ hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Woodbury home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online approach to education is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just make sure that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

After you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating x-ray technician colleges near Woodbury NJ. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Woodbury NJ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the radiology technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Woodbury NJ health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in Woodbury NJ in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Woodbury NJ home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Woodbury NJ schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the xray tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Woodbury NJ area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
