Wrightstown NJ x-ray tech school internship programThe basic prerequisite for attending a radiology tech school is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate also. Something to consider is that radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in Wrightstown NJ or their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in New Jersey or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer other options for testing also. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Wrightstown area employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options in and around Wrightstown NJ to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Schools

Wrightstown NJ student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So although you can still earn your degree online, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically performed in Wrightstown NJ family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Wrightstown home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online style of learning is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are often cheaper than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiographer Programs

After you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of locating and evaluating x-ray tech schools near Wrightstown NJ. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Wrightstown NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the radiology technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Wrightstown NJ medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in Wrightstown NJ in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the radiographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Wrightstown NJ home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Wrightstown NJ colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the xray technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Wrightstown NJ area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
