X-Ray Tech Degrees Available near Mamaroneck NY

Mamaroneck NY x-ray tech school internship programThe basic prerequisite for attending a radiology tech school is to have received a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be satisfied by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in Mamaroneck NY or their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several approve additional options for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Mamaroneck area employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options in and around Mamaroneck NY to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Schools

Mamaroneck NY student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often performed in Mamaroneck NY hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Mamaroneck home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online style of education is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just make certain that the online college you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

As soon as you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of locating and assessing x-ray technician schools near Mamaroneck NY. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material factor also. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Mamaroneck NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the radiology tech schools you are reviewing have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Mamaroneck NY medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in Mamaroneck NY in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Mamaroneck NY home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Mamaroneck NY colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Mamaroneck NY area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
