Radiology Tech Degrees Offered near Nanuet NY

Nanuet NY x-ray tech school internship programThe standard prerequisite for attending a radiology tech college is to have received a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable also. Something to bear in mind is that radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in Nanuet NY or their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many offer additional options for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Nanuet area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could increase your career options in and around Nanuet NY to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Programs

Nanuet NY student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your online degree, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is typically provided in Nanuet NY hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Nanuet home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of learning is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are generally less costly than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just make sure that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

As soon as you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating x-ray tech schools near Nanuet NY. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Nanuet NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the xray technician colleges you are interested in have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Nanuet NY health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in Nanuet NY in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Nanuet NY residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Nanuet NY colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the xray technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Nanuet NY area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
