X-Ray Technician Degrees Offered near Northport NY

Northport NY x-ray tech school internship programThe basic requirement for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can typically be satisfied by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in Northport NY or their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in New York or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number accept other options for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Northport area employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options in and around Northport NY to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Programs

Northport NY student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often conducted in Northport NY family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online portion of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Northport residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating x-ray tech colleges near Northport NY. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining variable also. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Northport NY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the radiology technician schools you are assessing have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Northport NY health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in Northport NY in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Northport NY residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Northport NY schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the xray tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the xray tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Northport NY area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Northport, New York

Northport is a historic maritime village in the Town of Huntington on Long Island, New York. Initially designated as Great Cow Harbour by 17th-century English colonists, the area was officially renamed Northport in 1837. In 1898, in order to localize governance Northport was incorporated as a village.

Northport is known for its Victorian era village center, still bearing trolley rails from a long since discontinued streetcar which would transport village residents to the Long Island Rail Road station in East Northport. The village Main Street runs from the Village Green along the harbor-front to the former hamlet of Vernon Valley, which has since been subsumed by the neighboring community of East Northport. As of 2010, the village has a population of around 7,401[2] and is served by the Northport-East Northport School District.

The original inhabitants of the area now known as Northport were the Matinecocks, one of 13 Native American tribes of Long Island. The Matinecocks called this land Opcathontyche, which meant "wading place creek".[3] After Dutch interest a few years earlier, the land was sold by Chief Asharoken, head of the Matinecocks, to three Englishmen in 1656.[4]
