Spring Valley NY x-ray tech school internship programThe primary requirement for attending an x-ray tech college is to have received a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in Spring Valley NY or their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be working you may need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number accept other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Spring Valley area employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options in and around Spring Valley NY to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Degrees

Spring Valley NY student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often performed in Spring Valley NY family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Spring Valley home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are generally more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

After you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing x-ray tech schools near Spring Valley NY. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Spring Valley NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the xray technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Spring Valley NY health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in Spring Valley NY in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Spring Valley NY home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Spring Valley NY schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the xray tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Spring Valley NY area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Spring Valley, New York

Spring Valley is a suburb of New York City, a village in the towns of Ramapo and Clarkstown in Rockland County, New York, United States. It is located north of Chestnut Ridge, east of Airmont and Monsey, south of Hillcrest, and west of Nanuet. The population was 31,347 at the 2010 census,[3] making it the 2nd most populous community in Rockland County, after New City.

Spring Valley spans the border of two towns, occupying an eastern portion of the town of Ramapo and a small western portion of the town of Clarkstown. The village is next to the New York State Thruway (Interstate 87) and is served by a New Jersey Transit train station at the terminus of the Pascack Valley Line.

In 1842, the New York & Erie Railroad called this part of the territory "Pascack", after a stream by the same name. The residents of the area decided to call the place Spring Valley – one certain large spring in the Valley Pond being responsible for the name. Prior to naming the territory Spring Valley, it was called Scotland, named after their homeland, by Scotsmen who had settled in the area.
