Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in Stafford NY or their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in New York or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many approve other options for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Stafford area employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options in and around Stafford NY to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Schools

Stafford NY student attending online x-ray tech schoolAs a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is usually provided in Stafford NY hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Stafford residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just confirm that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

Once you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of looking for and assessing x-ray tech colleges near Stafford NY. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Stafford NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the xray technician programs you are evaluating have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Stafford NY medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in Stafford NY in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Stafford NY home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Stafford NY schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the xray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Stafford NY area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
